I've been using this for more than six years now. I use it every day, multiple times. It is incredibly useful. You can use much fewer dishes with an accurate scale, and save time as well as getting more accurate measurements. When I bought this scale, I also bought a set of little weights -- from 1g all the way up to 500g -- in order to figure out whether the scale is accurate. It was. Well, yesterday I took those weights back out and tested the scale again. I thought there was no way it would still be accurate after six years of daily use. Well, it was -- completely accurate. If I put 1g on the scale, the readout says 1g. If I put 393g on the scale, the readout says 393g. Pretty impressive. That's when I decided I better come back and write a review.

This scale is ideal and simple to use for weighing food (in oz, lbs/oz, grams) to help keep your food portions manageable. I have one of these for two different kitchens. It has a slightly elevated base which allows for easy viewing of the display--never make the mistake of getting a scale without this feature. (As a bonus, this kitchen scale also comes in handy once in awhile for checking letters/envelopes to see how much, in any, extra postage might be needed.)

I just got into artisan sourdough baking a week or so before the holidays. Using Chad Robertson's "Tartine Bread" book as a guide, I crafted the Country Bread recipe into loaves that looked and tasted so good, they became much-appreciated holiday gifts for friends and family. In order to make this type of bread required several new tools of which I had no previous knowledge. This digital kitchen scale is one of those tools. Using an accurate-to-the-gram scale exclusively for all baking ingredients measurements was new to me, but now that I've done it, the results speak for themselves. Weight is more accurate than volume, and with this scale, it's so easy to "zero" the display using the left button and add the next ingredient weighed to the gram. The Primo Escali was the best value for the money of the scales I researched on Amazon. The only drawback is with a large bowl on top, it's hard to see the display. Not enough of an issue to change my rating because I'm used to it now.

Scale is consistent and accurate. I'm happy with it. Because I don't trust the finish/paint, I won't put any food directly on the scale & will always use a container. Accuracy: Used a 1 gram calibration weight I bought via Amazon; the scale showed 1 gram for the weight. Consistency: I re-weighed different objects multiple times (keeping the scale on, turning it off & on, etc.) and each object's weight was consistent. Scale is very light and outside material is plastic. Mine is chrome-colored. There are no removable components from the scale - the entire scale is a single piece. e.g. the round top where you place things you want to weigh is not removable; if something spills on it, you just wipe it. This means you can't just a piece of it in the dishwasher; you have to just simply wipe the scale. It also means that the cleaning is easy - there aren't any nooks and crannies that are tough to get spills out. The round top where you weigh things has a chrome finish/paint that looks and feels like something I wouldn't want to put food directly on (will it chip? what's the finish/paint made of?). I asked the manufacturer (escali) & they said there's no lead in the finish/paint but ... I just would never put any food directly on the scale (e.g. an apple). The manufacturer then pointed me to a stainless steel add-on for the scale that they have for the scale, but I decided not to buy it. I Tare function is a convenience. I don't normally use it b/c I just first weigh the container I'm using for the food, etc that I want to weigh and note its weight to manually subtract it in my head. But tare is nice: just turn on the scale, then put whatever empty container (e.g. a plastic bowl) that you don't want included in the weight of the food, etc that you're looking to weigh on the scale, you'll see the weight of your empty container, hit tare button (same button as the On/Off button) to tell the scale to subtract the weight of your container, and ... you'll see the scale go to 0 with your container on it. You can then just add the food, etc that you're looking to weigh into the container. You can even take the container off and add what you need to add and put your container back on the scale with your food, etc, in it. If you want to tell the scale to stop using the tare for this container, just click on the tare button again. Note that if you have the scale turned off and have something on the scale when you turn it, the scale will subtract the weight of whatever's on the scale. So ... you want to not having anything on the scale when you turn it on.

Works perfectly, is very intuitive (one button turns it on and zeroes it (and tares it, for adding incremental amounts). The other button switches between metric and Imperial. I tested it using various stacks of coins. The scale's error was never more than 2g, and never more than 1%. I am very happy. If I HAD to name a limitation: the scale's weight limit means I can't weigh things I'm putting in a cast-iron pan, but that is a very minor issue. But I'm stretching here; it works perfectly fine with a plate or bowl to weigh the quantities I need. This is a replacement for an analog scale, and it is so much more accurate and easy to use. I wish I'd bought it years earlier. Received 2019 May 02. Reviewed 2019 May 15.

I bought an earlier version of this scale, in black, quite a while ago -- maybe ten years ago, maybe more. It has been an absolute trooper, and I still use it today in my workshop. I bought this new version recently because my old one was looking a bit battle-scarred. Honorable scars mind you, but my wife wanted something better-looking for the kitchen. She bought another brand of scale which coughed and died in less than a year. That gave me the opportunity to buy another Escali Primo, in red. My wife likes red appliances. And I have not been disappointed. The new scale is every bit as simple and reliable as its predecessor. Better yet, it has been modestly improved. The new scale stays on for quite a bit longer than the old one does. That means you have much more time to go about your culinary business without worrying that the scale will 'time out' on you and lose its reading. (If you feel you have cause to worry about it timing out all you need to do is touch the scale so it senses a change in weight. That resets the time-out clock. A simple fix to a rare inconvenience.) The Escali Primo is simply a wonderfully elegant little appliance that does exactly what it is intended to do, and continues to do it for many, many years. Bravo Escali!

Love this scale! This is my third kitchen scale. They've all been different styles. I was worried I wouldn't like this one but it is my favorite by far. It zero's out quickly. My other two scales I had to push the tare button multiple times to get it to zero out correctly. This scale is very accurate. I remeasure things because my other scales were so bad and so off that I would have to weigh things over and over again and just take an average. This scale is on point no matter how many times I verify the weight. I love the color. I love that it measures in 1 gram increments, and not 2 like my last scale. It is very easy to use. I love that it comes with regular batteries and not the circle watch batteries. I hate those batteries and they are also dangerous to have around the house if you have kids. If a child swallows one of those circle batteries they could get brain damage. Not worth the risk to use those batteries.

WHY ESCALI PRIMO: I bought this scale after seeing it recommended in many forums, blogs, and review articles that addressed equipment for use in bread baking. I am not at all disappointed with my purchase. MY USAGE: I use this scale on a daily basis and it performs quite admirably. I primarily use it to weigh things such as sourdough starter, flour, and water. Weighing things like flour, which sometimes clings to the sides of the container, or water, which sometimes sloshes around, are more challenging than weighing something small and solid, such as a nickel. PERFORMANCE: When I first received it, I put it through several tests to satisfy myself as to its accuracy. I am quite confident that this scale gives accurate readings, no matter what is being weighed. The tare function makes it very easy to add several ingredients to a container, weighing each one separately. And, if it is important for you, the scale does show negative readings (for instance, if you remove the item that was just weighed). OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: There is a nice selection of colors from which to choose; I bought red and am quite happy with it. There is a reason I prefer this style/design (with the raised circular weighing platform, with the control buttons on the top of the scale in front of the platform) over the my other scale (which has a sleek flat surface - all of which is the weighing platform). Since the two scales function with equal accuracy, and the other scale is definitely more attractive, you would think I would prefer the other one. Well, even though I love the looks of the other scale, the design has one drawback. Because the on/off control is on the front edge, it is easily bumped. The scale is often being turned on by accident. This is a real annoyance for me. There is never an accidental button push with this Escali Primo scale, and in my mind that is a big plus! BOTTOM LINE: I love this scale. I like the fact that it has a well-deserved reputation for consistent satisfactory performance (good reviews on many different websites). It is a workhorse, that never lets me down. I would recommend this to friends and family, as well as to all of you reading this review. In my opinion, upon finding this scale, your search is over; this is the scale to buy!

I have 2 other scales and they work. One doesn't ever shut off now, and the other I sent to the other home I cook in a lot. I thought, "OK, maybe this will work a little better than first." This little bad boy is fast on the reading! When you are measuring 3 and 5 grams and one doesn't even move past 3 grams after you have put 5 tablespoons of espresso on it, then touch it just .. This WORKS!! so fast, that I can have 4 grams and wait a second to see if it goes up, then drop about a pinhead size of yeast in it goes up to the 5.. That's fast.. Seems to be fairly accurate. As I get a few too many in and take a pinch out, if I pinch too much, it lets me know quickly to put some back in. It has a shut off that actually works after a minute or so.. sometimes too fast if I run out of an ingredient and have to open a new bag up, so I always remember my last weight for just in case. It is even a scale recommended on some of the websites that sell baking items on here. I do not regret this one in the least after the 5 times of use and wish I had found it earlier. It looks to be cheap, but when I put approx. 14 cups of flour on it, it had no issues. Would buy again for sure.

This is an excellent scale; there's good reason that it's recommended so widely. Starts up quickly, really good accuracy, tare function works great, no beeps (which are so unnecessary and annoying), stays on for a decent length of time but not long enough to drain the battery too much...I'm really happy with it, and using it a good bit more than my old mechanical one. The only limitation I've run across so far is that it can be a little hard to see the display if you've put a full-size dinner plate on the scale, but I'd rather live with that than have to give up the convenient size and inexpensive price of this scale as it is.
